What is a micro story?

I was first introduced to this idea on Jeffrey Callison's Sacramento NPR radio interview show called Insight. He interviewed Jason Sinclair Long about his blog "Flash Fiction 365". You can hear the interview here.

The challenge is to write a micro-story each day. The length of the story is determined by throwing a pair of dice, preferably of different colors. One color represents the tens digit and the other the ones digit. So the story can be from 11 to 66 words. Of course some lengths are left out using this method. You could also use one die and throw it twice. Or use a die with 8 sides. Or you can do what I did and create a random number generator in Excel. This method doesn't miss any of the numbers. Mine will return a random number between 11 and 99. I am happy to share the formula if you email me.

The title is not part of the word count. Most word processors have a word count function that is very useful. You can start with a title or add it later or you can have someone suggest a title. Even though the original idea is to write a story, I plan to include poetry and perhaps essay.

Title: The End

It started with an earthquake. Not a really big one but a good shake nonetheless. He walked outside after the earth stopped moving. What caught his eye first was the bright orange glow over the horizon. Then came another big shake, this time accompanied by a delayed rumbling and a huge column of fire. He could see the pyroclastic flow coming at him and knew it was the end.

It goes without saying that a good looking business man visiting Atlanta would be able to find a knockout southern belle for dinner and drinks.

“Love to,” he said watching her eyes checking him out, her hand caressing his leg.

The scientific research ship, Jingling, was in stationary orbit around Titan. They were using multiple-frequency, remote sensing equipment to plot the methane seas to a depth of 1200 meters. Jean was watching the monitor as the images were coming in. At 560 meters she could clearly see a mass moving slowly upstream.

“Sid,” she yelled, “we’ve got a bogie at 560!”

Title: Synthia and Mitochondria

Synthia knew the quantum machine she needed. It must interface with the mitochondria of Slug’s wetnet-in fact, with his whole biological system. She know that mitochondria were the answer. It had been discovered that they have a structure that interfaces at the quantum level with an interdimensional plane that was outside of ordinary experience. If she could communicate with the plane then she might be able to instruct Slug’s mitochondria to enhance his native ability to pilot the Kröger. But she did have mitochondria in her systems. She would have to invent them.

He followed the light and listened closely. Sure enough, there was a solution.
She called his name once more, “Phil, open your eyes.”
He opened his eyes and looked deeply into her eyes for a long time. The silence was beautiful.
“Marry me,” he said.

Title: Synthia and the Quantum State

Back on the Kröger, Synthia was reviewing her research on quantum effects. She had determined that in order to interface with Slug’s wetnet she would have to do it at a quantum level. Since it had been discovered that superposition, that unintuitive state where matter is in two states simultaneously, could resolve into one state or the other, and that consciousness toggled it, she knew that a quantum machine was the answer. But how to adapt technology to build it.

That they are privileged in some way and he wanted that freedom to decide which physical laws to ignore. He sighed, his bones creaking as he rose.

One of the few times that Synthia left the Kröger, she and Slug took a shuttle from Marsport to the NASA Rover Spirit Monument. Slug reflected in silence remembering the story about how the twin rovers began the colonization of Mars. How a succession of remotely controlled vehicles led to the discovery of water and a fortune in minerals. Then came the businesses to support the mining and Marsport became a city. Soon this led to the development of androids and the beginning of Synthia’s lineage.
